Tapping

Adding Hammer Ons And Pull Offs

By incorporating left hand hammer ons and pull offs along with the right hand tapping, we can create fast and fluid lines on the guitar. Take the following for example.

e:-t12p5h8-|
B:---------|
G:---------|
D:---------|
A:---------|
E:---------|

The above lick is all played on the high E string. While getting the lick down slowly increase speed and play over and over again. The end result is really fast lick. Here is a step by step guide to play the lick

  • - Tap onto the 12th fret with your right hand.
  • - Pull of the 12th fret to the 5th fret played with your left hand.
  • - Hammer on to the 8th fret.
  • - Repeat.

Here is another tapping example. This one is a little longer.

A:----------------|
E:----------------|

Here is the step by step guide to playing the lick.

  • - Tap onto the 12th fret with your right hand.
  • - Pull of the 12th fret to the 5th fret played with your left hand.
  • - Hammer on to the 8th fret.
  • - Tap back to the 12th fret with your right hand
  • - Pull off the 12th fret tohe 8th fret played with your left hand.
  • - Pull off again to the 5th fret.

These two examples could be played one any string, go ahead and move them to different strings and try playing those same patterns but on different frets. In Part III, we discuss what to do with your pick.
